Solving Insomnia
by Scott Theirl, DC, DACNB, FUNCTIONAL NEUROLOGY

Q:  What new approaches are available for sleep difficulties/insomnia?
A:  There have been many new advances in helping people that experience insomnia.  It is important to note that insomnia is defined as difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, frequent waking or any combination of the previously mentioned.
The new Functional Neurology model of health care focuses on brain health with the realization that the nervous system, the endocrine (hormone) system, and the immune system all interact and can positively or negatively affect brain health.  Consequently, it is important to look at biomarkers on lab testing that can provide insight into neuro-endo-immune function and health.
Neurologic biomarkers (urine neurotransmitters) can point to suboptimal stress responses and imbalanced excitatory/inhibitory neurotransmitters.  Other biomarkers map hormones (saliva stress and sex hormones such as cortisol and estrogen) to insure optimal production of hormones that give us energy and respond to stress.   Additional biomarkers can point to food sensitivities that may be overexciting the brain and nervous system.  By assessing these different systems via testing we gain insight into the specific systems that can contribute to brain over-excitation and consequently sleep difficulties.
Using multiple system analysis, the Functional Neurology approach gets to the root cause of your insomnia, and supports the brain, hormone and immune systems at the same time for improved nighttime sleep and optimal daytime function of cognitive, emotional and physical systems.  Utilizing diet and supplement recommendations, neuro-endo-immune function can be supported and neurologic symptoms such as insomnia, attention difficulties and chronic pain are commonly improved.
